How to measure an opening for a Roller Shutter
Measuring a roller shutter opening accurately is crucial to ensure that the shutter fits perfectly, providing optimal security and functionality. Start by measuring the width of the opening at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. Use the widest measurement as your width to accommodate any irregularities in the wall. For the height, measure from the floor to the underside of the lintel at both the left and right sides of the opening, and use the taller measurement. This accounts for any slope in the floor or variance in the opening's height.

Measuring a doorway for roller shutters is a straightforward process that requires careful attention to detail to ensure a precise fit. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you measure a doorway opening for roller shutters:
Tools Needed
- Tape Measure: Preferably a metal retractable one with mm for accuracy.
- Notepad and Pen: For recording measurements.
- Step Ladder: If the doorway is particularly high.
- Level: To check the evenness of the opening.
Step by Step Guide
Step 1: Check the Opening
Examine the Doorway: Before measuring, ensure the doorway is in good condition. Any irregularities like bumps or cracks should be fixed as they can affect the fit of the shutter.
Step 2: Measure the Structural Opening Width
Measure at Three Points: Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement as your width. This accounts for any unevenness in the opening.
Record Each Measurement: Write down each width measurement to compare. (1).
Check Side Room: Measure the space available on each side of the opening. This is crucial for the roller shutter's side guides.
Record Each Measurement: Write down each width measurement 4L and 4R.
Step 3: Measure the Structural Opening Height
Measure at Both Sides: Measure the height on both the left and right sides of the opening. Like with the width, use the smallest measurement.
Record the Measurements: Note down each height measurement. (2).
Check Headroom: Measure the space available above the opening. This space is needed for the roller shutter box.
Record the Measurements: Note down the height measurement on each side of the opening. (3).

Decide on the Mounting and Fitting

Inside the Recess (Reveal) Mount:
Measure Precisely: If mounting the shutter inside the recess, your measurements need to be very accurate as the shutter will fit within the existing space.Consider the Depth: Ensure there's enough depth in the recess for the roller shutter mechanism.
Tight Fit: The shutter will align with the inner edges of the opening, so precise measurements are crucial to avoid any gaps or overhangs.
Over the Opening Mount:
Larger Dimensions: When mounting over the opening, the shutter needs to be larger than the opening dimensions.
Width Consideration: Add extra width to each side of your measured opening width. This overlap ensures complete coverage and security. The amount of extra width required will depend on the manufacturer's specifications and the space available on each side.
Height Consideration: Similarly, add extra height above the opening to accommodate the shutter box and below the opening for full coverage. The specific amount will depend on the shutter type and manufacturer's guidelines.
Check Externals: Ensure that adding extra dimensions does not interfere with external features like pipes, light fixtures, or architectural details.
