There are several different types of vision shutter slats available, each designed to provide varying levels of visibility, airflow, security, and aesthetics.

The most common option is perforated slats, which feature small punched holes across the face of the slat to allow limited visibility, natural light, and ventilation while maintaining a more secure and discreet appearance. These are widely used on retail shopfronts and shopping centres where products need to remain partially visible after closing hours.

Punched slats provide larger slot style openings for maximum visibility and airflow through the shutter curtain. These are commonly used for retail displays, bars, kiosks, and commercial premises where visual presentation is important. Punched slats are available in both galvanised steel and aluminium options, with aluminium offering a lighter-weight architectural finish and steel providing increased strength and security.

Vision slats can also be combined with solid slats within the same shutter curtain to create a balance between visibility and security. A common configuration is to install punched or perforated slats at eye level for display purposes, with solid slats positioned at lower levels or throughout the remainder of the curtain to provide enhanced protection, privacy, and structural strength.

Roller shutter slats are the horizontal profiles that interlock together to form the shutter curtain. Over time, slats can become bent, dented, or damaged, often due to impact, attempted forced entry, or normal wear and tear. In many cases, damaged slats can be replaced individually, allowing the shutter to be repaired without replacing the entire curtain.

However, it is important that replacement slats match the original slat specification. Changing the slat profile, thickness, or material can affect how the curtain rolls on the barrel, the weight of the shutter, and how it travels within the guide rails.

When ordering replacement slats, two key measurements are required:

1. Cut Length (Slat Width)

The cut length is the width of the slat excluding the end locks.

This measurement represents the actual metal slat length before the end locks are attached.

2. Overall Width

The overall width is the full width of the slat including the end locks fitted on each side.

End locks help keep the curtain aligned within the guide rails and prevent the slats from moving sideways during operation.

To ensure accurate replacement slats:

• Remove one of the existing slats if possible and measure it directly
• Measure the cut length without the end locks fitted
• Measure the overall width including the end locks
• Identify the slat profile and height
• Check whether the slats are steel or aluminium

Providing clear photos and measurements can help ensure the correct replacement slats are supplied.

Replacing slats is usually possible when:

Only a small section of the curtain is damaged

The remaining slats are in good condition

The barrel, guides, and operating system are still functioning correctly

If the curtain has widespread damage or corrosion, replacing the entire curtain may be more practical.

Replacing roller shutter slats is often a cost-effective way to repair a damaged shutter, restoring both the appearance and security of the installation while avoiding the cost of a full shutter replacement.
