Case Study: Vodafone
Security Direct has secured many Vodafone stores up and down the country. Phones are expensive and this makes phone shops vulnerable to attacks. We have installed hundreds of roller shutters to Vodafone shops, mainly to secure the shop fronts. Due to a planning restrictions on most high streets, the roller shutters are fitted internally. We usually work with a contractor, who strips out the old shop and refurbishes it to Vodafone requirements. We have installed quite a few different types of roller shutters in the Vodafone stores. They have all been Vision Retail Shutters, so customers can see into the shop, but the stock is protected. The picture of the Vodafone store in York, uses a Punched Aluminium - 58% Vision, which provided 58% vision. This shutter was used due to the size of the shop front and the amount of vision it provided. On other stores, we have used the Compact Punched - 44% Vision, ideal when headroom is limited. One some shops we have to use the Punched or Perforated Steel - 18% Vision as they can span openings wider than 6m. All the shutters are powder coated to suit the Vodafone brand colours. They are electrically operated and are fitted with Battery Backups, in case of a power failure. Security Direct continues to work with Vodafone on a regular basis on their stores nationwide.

Case Study: KFC
Security Direct has worked on many KFC restaurants across the UK. The restaurant was getting broken into and vandalised when closed. The cost to repair the damage and disruption was becoming very high. KFC asked Security Direct for a solution to protect all the windows, doors and Drive Thru Windows around the building. Security Direct proposed using the Compact Security Roller Shutters. The roller shutter had a small shutter box, so would reduce the amount of light that comes through the full height windows. The customer wanted a High Security roller shutter but wanted some vision through the roller shutter for safety. The roller shutters were powder coated to match the KFC brand colours. Other KFC installations include Fire Shutters over kitchen serveries and chemical stores. We have fitted Vision Commercial Shutters over the serving areas, to protect the staff on an evening but still to allow the staff to take and serve orders. We have used a range of Solid Roller Shutters to close off areas of the restaurant during certain times of the day.

Case Study: High-Security Retractable Grilles for a Merseyside Police Facility
Security Direct has worked with the Main Contractor on a Merseyside Police facility. The main contractor was refurbishing an office facility, to the Police requirements. This was a very high security site, so security was paramount. The product specified was the CS13, which is an Insurance Approved - Level 3 Security Grille. The retractable grilles were fitted to all Ground floor windows and doors. Due to the strict fixing requirements of the CS13 security grille, the main building contractors had to carry out building works to the window reveals. These grilles cannot be fitted to plasterboard, they have to be fitted direct to the brickwork. In theory, plasterboard could be chiselled out, making the fixing vulnerable. The contractor removed all the plasterboard around the windows and plastered directly to the brick. This ensures that the grilles met the fixings requirements and provided a good strong fixing point. Merseyside Police were very happy with the product and installation and have specified the product on similar projects for the future. They liked the fact that the grilles were very high security, but also low maintenance and cheaper too purchase, compared to a roller shutter with the same security level. Fixing a security grille into an unsuitable or weak substrate could create a vulnerable point. At the Merseyside Police facility, building works were therefore completed around the windows to ensure the security grilles met the required fixing requirements. 5. For this project, the client valued the combination of high security, low maintenance and cost-effectiveness offered by the retractable grilles. Unlike a permanent barrier, they can also be retracted when not required. Case Study: Starbucks
Security Direct has worked on many Starbucks restaurants across the UK. The picture shows a Starbucks store in Birmingham, that we have recently installed. The restaurant is on a motorway services which is open 24hrs a day, with the store only open between 7am-9pm each day. They needed a product to close off the store to the public when they are closed. They asked Security Direct for a solution. The problem with a roller shutter was the width of the opening (approx. 12m) and no headroom above for a shutter box. The best solution was our Sliding Folding Shutters, which can go up to 30m wide and run on a 40mm high top track. We used the Perforated Internal Sliding Security Shutters - 30% Vision as it allowed ventilation, looked nice and provided a good level of security. The sliding shutters don't have a bottom track to trip over, they just have shootbolts which lock into the ground for rigidity. The building contractor had to put extra supports into the head of the opening to carry the weight of the sliding shutter (approx 175kgs per linear meter). They also built some cupboard at each side for the shutter stack to fold into and neatly be concealed. Starbucks has already installed more of these sliding shutters across its new stores. Starbucks liked the idea, that these are easy to operate and require little maintenance, compared to roller shutters.

Case Study: High-Security Retractable Grilles for Tebay Services Farm Shop
Tebay Services, situated near the Lake District, is far from your typical motorway service station. Known for its Farm Shop, restaurant and focus on locally sourced produce, it offers visitors a very different experience from a conventional motorway stop. Security Direct recently had the opportunity to work on a project at this prestigious site, providing a security solution for the newly extended entrance to the Farm Shop. The project presented an interesting challenge. The client wanted to make the entrance significantly wider and more open, creating a welcoming environment for customers during trading hours while still being able to securely close the Farm Shop when required. With an opening of approximately 12 metres wide, limited headroom and the need to keep the entrance as open as possible, a conventional roller shutter wasn't the most suitable solution. The Challenge: Securing a 12-Metre-Wide Farm Shop Entrance As part of the redevelopment, the main contractor carried out building works to increase the Farm Shop entrance from approximately 6 metres to 12 metres wide. The larger opening helped create the open-plan appearance the client wanted, but it also created a new security challenge. A traditional roller shutter was considered, but the combination of the very wide opening and limited available headroom meant this wasn't the best option for the project. The client also considered our Sliding Shutters. However, after reviewing the alternatives, they preferred a High Security Retractable Grille. The retractable grille offered several advantages for this particular application. It provided the heavier-duty appearance the client wanted, was a more cost-effective solution and maintained the open feel of the Farm Shop entrance. Why Choose a High-Security Retractable Grille? Retractable security grilles can be particularly effective for large commercial openings where a traditional shutter isn't practical or where maintaining visibility is important. For Tebay Services, the grille could be extended across the entrance when security was required and retracted when the Farm Shop was open. This provided a combination of: Physical security across a very large opening An open appearance through the grille Minimal impact on the Farm Shop during trading hours A practical alternative where there was insufficient headroom for a roller shutter A cost-effective solution for the size of the opening Flexibility in how different sections of the entrance could be used This last point became particularly useful in the final design. Supporting a Large Retractable Security Grille With an opening approximately 12 metres wide, careful consideration had to be given to the structure supporting the grille. The main contractor therefore provided additional supports across the top of the opening to help carry the weight of the security grille. Coordination between the security product and the surrounding building works was an important part of the project. On unusually large openings, it's essential to consider not just the security product itself, but also what it will be fixed to and how it will operate once installed. Top and Bottom Rolling Wheels for Easier Operation Because of the overall size of the opening, we specified the grilles with top and bottom rolling wheels. These help support the grille as it moves and make a large system considerably easier to operate. Ease of use is particularly important with a product that staff may need to open and close regularly. A security solution can provide excellent protection, but it also needs to be practical for the people using it every day. The rolling wheel arrangement helped achieve that balance. Creating a Neat Storage Area for the Grille Another clever element of the project was how the grille was stored when the Farm Shop was open. The main contractor constructed a cupboard at one side of the opening, allowing half of the retractable grille to neatly stack away when it wasn't required. Rather than simply leaving the other half unused, it was incorporated into the operation of the Farm Shop. When the shop was open for business, the remaining section of grille could be used as a dividing wall. This meant the security system had a useful secondary purpose during trading hours rather than only being required when the shop was closed. Security Without Losing the Open-Plan Design One of the main objectives of the refurbishment was to make the Farm Shop entrance feel larger, more open and more welcoming. Installing a security solution shouldn't undermine the purpose of the refurbishment itself. The High Security Retractable Grille worked particularly well because it could provide a substantial physical barrier when required while retaining visibility through the opening. When not needed, a large section could be stacked neatly away. This made the grille a practical solution for balancing security, appearance and everyday operation. A Flexible Solution for Large Commercial Openings Although this installation was for a Farm Shop, the same principle can apply to many other commercial premises with large or unusual openings. Retractable security grilles can be considered for applications including: Retail stores and shopping centres Farm shops Restaurants and hospitality venues Reception areas Internal commercial spaces Schools and public buildings Warehouses and industrial premises Large entrances where roller shutter headroom is restricted Every opening is different, however, particularly when dealing with unusually large dimensions. The supporting structure, fixing points, floor, available stacking space and frequency of operation all need to be considered when specifying the system. Project Completion – A Personal Note I was personally involved in helping with the Tebay Services project and finding the right solution for what was quite an unusual opening. Tebay is also a site I particularly enjoy visiting myself. It isn't like a conventional motorway service station, and the Farm Shop and locally sourced produce give it a completely different feel. If you're ever travelling near Tebay, I'd recommend calling in. Gloucester Services is operated by the same family business and is also well worth a visit. From a security perspective, this was an interesting project because simply installing a standard roller shutter wasn't really an option. We had to consider the width of the new opening, limited headroom, how the grille would be supported and, importantly, how staff would use it every day. Seeing the completed installation was particularly satisfying. The High Security Retractable Grilles provided the security the client needed without taking away from the open and welcoming entrance they had worked hard to create. The way one section could be concealed inside a purpose-built cupboard while the other could function as a dividing wall was also a great example of the main contractor, client and Security Direct working together to make the security solution part of the overall design. Need to Secure a Large or Unusual Opening? Not every commercial opening is suitable for a conventional roller shutter. Claridges is one of the worlds most famous luxury hotels in the world. Set in the heart of Mayfair, Claridges is an art deco icon and a byword for timeless elegance. Since the 1850's Claridges has excelled in the finer things in life, glamorous design, inspiring dining and impeccable service. There are many 5 star hotels in London but nowhere quite like Claridges. Claridges approached Security Direct, as they were looking for a Roller Shutter specialist that install a High Speed and High Usage Roller Shutter on their loading bay area. The loading bay is large as they do get articulated lorries, making daily deliveries. We installed the 100mm Insulated Industrial Roller Shutter Doors, as it easily covered the size of the opening. The advantage of this shutter is that also operates quieter than a traditional steel shutter, which can rattle in the wind. Having a quieter roller shutter door was important as they didn't want something noisy, especially as it's near to some bedrooms and function rooms. Case Study: Fire Shutters and Security Doors for the London Underground
The London Underground is one of the world's most recognisable transport networks, with a huge variety of security, fire safety and access-control requirements across its stations and supporting infrastructure. Security Direct has completed a significant amount of work across the London Underground network over the years. Our involvement has included projects at existing stations, new stations and service yards, with products specified for a variety of different applications. The work has ranged from fire shutters protecting retail and storage areas to specialist steel doors providing fire resistance, acoustic performance, ventilation, emergency egress and physical security. These projects demonstrate the importance of selecting a security product around the requirements of each individual opening rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. The Challenge: Security Across a Complex Transport Environment A London Underground station is very different from a conventional commercial building. Within a single station or associated service area, there can be public spaces, retail units, plant and storage rooms, staff-only areas, service yards and restricted locations. Each area can present a different requirement. Some openings need to help maintain fire compartmentation. Others require controlled access, ventilation, acoustic performance or a secure emergency exit. This has resulted in Security Direct supplying a broad range of products across different London Underground projects. Fire Shutters for Retail Units and Storage Areas One of the solutions we have installed within the Underground network is Fire Shutters. These have been used for applications including retail units and storage areas. Fire shutters are designed to automatically close when required as part of a building's fire strategy, creating a physical fire-resistant barrier across an opening. This can make them particularly useful for locations where an opening needs to remain accessible during normal operation but must be protected in the event of a fire. Two steel doors may look relatively similar, but their required performance can be very different. Fire Exit Doors Fire Exit Doors have also formed part of our work across the network. The appropriate hardware and door specification therefore need to reflect how the exit is intended to operate. For busy transport infrastructure, reliability and ease of operation are particularly important considerations. Louvred Steel Doors Another product supplied for London Underground projects has been louvred steel doors. Louvred doors provide security while allowing airflow through the opening, making them suitable for locations where ventilation is required alongside physical protection. This can be particularly useful for plant and service areas containing equipment that requires a regular flow of air. Rather than compromising security by leaving an area open for ventilation, a purpose-designed louvred steel door can provide both functions within a single doorset. Security-Rated Steel Doors We have also provided security-rated steel doors for areas where a higher level of physical protection was required. Restricted and service areas within transport infrastructure can contain equipment, plant or other assets that need to be protected against unauthorised access. A security-rated doorset can provide a tested physical security solution where a standard commercial door may not offer the required level of protection. The exact specification will depend on the individual project and its security requirements. Different Products for Different Areas One of the most interesting aspects of our work on London Underground projects is the variety of applications involved. There isn't a single "Underground security door" or shutter that works everywhere. Instead, the correct solution depends on what the opening needs to achieve. A retail unit may require a fire shutter. A plant room might require a louvred or acoustic steel door. An escape route may need a fire exit doorset, while a restricted area could require a higher-security steel door. Understanding these differences is essential when specifying physical security products for complex infrastructure. Working Around Existing and New Infrastructure Our work hasn't been limited to one type of London Underground project. Case Study: PJD Guitars
Security Direct have been lucky to work with the prestigious guitar maker PJD Guitars in Pocklington, East Yorkshire. PJD Guitars was founded in 2010 by Leigh Dovey. The name PJD is dedicated to the memory of Leigh's late father who was prop maker for the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. Leigh started working with a basic knowledge of wood work picked up from his father and was lucky enough to inherit his tools as well as a small home workshop. Leigh spent his days working as a sound and video engineer at the Royal Opera House and his evenings honing his craft in guitar building. Leigh was lucky early on in having the chance to work with some great artists, giving him the confidence to grow his skills. Fast forward to 2020 and a move up to York to a bigger workshop, and for the past 6 months Leigh has been putting his heart and soul into building the best instruments he has ever built. Security Direct have been lucky to work with Health Education England. Health Education England (HEE) exists for one reason only: to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and health improvement to the patients and public of England by ensuring that the workforce of today and tomorrow has the right numbers, skills, values and behaviours, at the right time and in the right place. Their Head Office is based in the centre of Leicester. Security Direct has worked closely with HEE in securing their offices, as they have had issues with attempted break-ins. Case Study: Happerley England - Lock 29 Banbury
Security Direct was approached by the architect for Banbury Borough Council, looking for a solution to a new market project at Castle Quay Shopping Centre. The project was called Lock 29 which began as an idea to breathe new life into a canal side destination in Banbury, utilising abandoned space that would bring great benefit to the local community and beyond. In addition to the venue featuring diverse and exciting food and drink artisans, there will be a casual pop-up cinema for secret cinema clubs and educational activities, space for events which will be open to the whole community and an edgy independent retail offering which binds it all together. Lock29 is a completely unique, creative space, which pays homage to its hometown, while reaching out to visitors from far and wide. Roller Shutters have occupied the space, which is a fast-growing food and drinks organisation, set up by farmers to empower farmers and create a level playing field for all food and drink businesses to validate, protect and promote the provenance value of their product while allowing the customer to make an informed choice. Security Direct worked with the team to create a security solution on securing these pods. We fitted custom made High Security Retractable Grille to each of the pods. We worked with the architect to ensure that those pods were designed to hide the grille stacks and ensure we had sufficient steelwork to install the Security Grilles into. These retractable security grilles, were the ideal choice as they were more cost effective than Roller Shutters and didn't require the same servicing and Maintenance that a roller shutter would require.
