Steel Fire Doors Preventing Business Fires

12th September 2018

Looking into fires in businesses and the security to prevent them

Fires aren’t picky, so no matter what business you’re in, you need to take the necessary precautions to avoid a disaster. It should be one of your main priorities to carry out a risk assessment of your business, and this needs to cover fire safety in depth.

A business becomes more at risk of a fire if they have not carried out a risk assessment, are careless with leaving paper and litter around and do not have their electrical equipment regularly tested for faults. Most electrical items produce some heat throughout the day, so it’s important for employees to be aware of the risk of overloading circuits and switching machines off at the end of the day.

To make the most out of the risk assessment, the fire safety officer in charge will have to filter their findings throughout the business, providing staff with information, instruction and training for how to prevent and stay safe in the event of a fire.

As the risk assessment is carried out, the appointed fire assessment officer should be looking out for ways to reduce risks or remove them completely. Eventually they will come up with an emergency plan for how to react in the event of a fire. A simple, but extremely effective safety precaution that a business could take to avoid the damage caused by a fire is by investing in fireproof doors.

Security Direct manufactures steel fire doors that are BS476 and BS EN 1634 tested and approved and can withstand up to six hours' exposure to fire and smoke. The steel doors are tested latched and unlatched and can still provide the same protection. However, if you’re opting for unlatched doors, you must have a Door Closer fitted.

Fire rated doors are worth their value tenfold as they can save a whole building going up in flames by containing the fire to its starting place. This not only gives employees and occupants the time to escape but with steel that can hold a fire for six hours, it usually gives fire fighters time to extinguish the fire before too much damage is done.

If you’re concerned that keeping a fire door closed at all times is going to disrupt the working environment or be a hazard there are plenty of other options. Rather than someone illegally wedging a fire door open, you could invest in fire door retainers which hold the doors legally and release at the sound of a fire alarm - therefore ensuring maximum safety.
