Buying a Garage Door

22nd November 2018

Over time garage doors end up needing replacing. It might be that long use and warming metal has stopped it fitting properly. Perhaps the mechanism is tired out, or maybe you just want a more up-to-date style.

Whatever the reason, a new garage door is a fantastic opportunity to increase not only how secure your garage is, but also how safely you can use the door.

The Benefits of Buying New

A new manual mechanism is guaranteed to operate much more smoothly than an older one, but with the option of electrical and rolling garage doors you can have a garage door fitted that opens at the mere press of a button.

Not only that, but it’s a great way to spruce up the front of your property too. Given the range of styles and colours that are available for garage doors, it’s never been easier to find a new door that matches your home’s aesthetic.

Safety First

Old garage doors tend to be powered by springs. Over time, constantly coiling and uncoiling, the springs take on a great deal of wear and tear, and quite often that leads to them snapping. This can be dangerous, and can lead to doors coming unattached and landing on whoever’s opening it.

Not only that, but if your automatic garage door that was fitted before 1993, it no longer meets the safety requirements for reversal. The most recent legislation requires automatic doors to be installed with a sensor that can detect objects beneath it. Before then, if something was in the door’s way, it risked being trapped beneath full force of the electric motor closing the door.

In both cases there is a clear risk of injury for anyone operating the garage door, which is why we advise that if you’re thinking about replacing your door, do so sooner rather than later.

Keeping Secure

Safety aside, another concern with old garage doors is the risk of burglary. Thieves know what to look for in insecure garage doors, from materials no longer used to tell-tale signs of weakened opening mechanisms. A grating spring and a door you struggle to close should be your warning signs that it’s time to replace, because they make a great invitation to housebreakers.

This is bad enough if you keep valuable vehicles and equipment in your garage, but if your garage also allows access to the rest of your property, the intruder has just one door to bypass to get access to your family home.

This can be an expensive and traumatic experience, and could have easily been avoided by the quality of security provided by choosing the right new garage door.
