A fire can cause devastation and completely destroy your entire property and everything within it. But, did you know that a fire-rated door can protect your commercial and industrial premises from this, by providing an effective barrier against the spread of fire?

What are Fire Doors?

Fire-rated doors are specialised doors designed and manufactured to provide a specific level of fire resistance in buildings. These doors play a crucial role in containing and preventing the spread of fire, smoke, and heat during emergencies.

Constructed using fire-resistant materials like steel, timber, and fire-rated glass, these doors are rigorously tested to ensure they meet established fire safety standards. The fire rating indicates the duration for which the door can withstand exposure to fire before its integrity is compromised. Common fire ratings include 30, 60, and 90 minutes. (These are usually marked up as FD30, FD60 or FD90 Fire Doors*).

Fire-rated doors are equipped with features such as intumescent seals that expand when exposed to heat, effectively sealing off gaps and maintaining their fire-resistant properties. These doors are strategically placed in areas where fire compartmentalisation is crucial, like stairwells, corridors, and rooms containing electrical equipment or flammable substances. In the event of a fire, fire-rated doors provide essential time for occupants to evacuate safely and aid first responders in their efforts to contain the blaze.

Fire Door Styles

Fire door styles encompass a diverse array of designs that seamlessly combine safety with aesthetics. Here are some popular fire door styles, each catering to different architectural preferences while maintaining crucial fire-resistant properties:

  • Glazed Fire DoorsGlazed fire doors incorporate glass panels to allow light and visibility, balancing the requirement for fire safety with the need for natural light. These types of fire doors are suitable for offices, corridors and areas requiring visibility.
  • Contemporary Fire Doors – These types of fire doors feature clean lines, minimalist details and geometric patterns to align with modern and industrial design trends, providing a sleek and sophisticated appearance. These doors are often used internally and are designed to match the rest of the doors within a property.
  • Steel-fire doors – Crafted from robust steel materials, steel fire doors are meticulously designed and rigorously tested to withstand the intense heat, flames and smoke of a fire emergency. With an option for these to be fully customisable, these doors provide maximum protection without compromising on style. These types of doors tend to be used within commercial or industrial premises.

Fire Door Colours

Fire door colours play a significant role in blending safety with aesthetics, offering a spectrum of options that cater to both functional requirements and interior design preferences. While the most common colours include neutral tones such as white fire doors, beige, and light grey fire doors, there's also room for customisation and creativity. These understated colours seamlessly integrate into a wide range of architectural styles, maintaining a professional and unobtrusive appearance while ensuring that fire safety standards are met.
